OUR HOME-GROWN CARP

A Sustainable Future for Wingham Fisheries

For over 25 years, Wingham Fisheries has been known for producing some of the UK’s largest and most memorable carp. As custodians of this unique environment, safeguarding the future of our stock has always been one of our highest priorities.

Six years ago, we took that commitment a step further by creating our own purpose built fish breeding facility. A long-term investment designed to make Wingham Fisheries fully self-sufficient. This in-house approach allows us to carefully select fry with the qualities Wingham Fisheries carp are renowned for: exceptional size potential, character, and long-term health.

A key advantage of this self-sufficient approach is the dramatically reduced risk of disease and parasite introduction. Buying fish from external sources always carries uncertainty, no matter how reputable the supplier. Transport stress, mixed environments, and unseen pathogens can all threaten an established fishery. By raising our own carp on site, in water quality we control from day one, we can ensure the very highest standards of health, welfare, and traceability. This protects not only our existing stock, but the long-term stability of our entire fishery ecosystem.

From spawning through to early growth, every stage is managed on site. This controlled, environmentally sensitive process ensures that each young carp is raised in the best possible conditions, resulting in fish that are strong, healthy, and perfectly adapted to our waters. Today, those efforts are paying off. Our homegrown carp have now been introduced into the lakes and are already showing outstanding growth rates. This unique programme not only protects the legacy of Wingham Fisheries historic carp, but also guarantees a sustainable, carefully managed future for generations to come.

HOW WE REAR OUR FISH

From Fry to C4's

As part of our long term breeding program, we carefully remove selected fry from the lakes and transfer them to our custom built indoor tank, where we closely manage their diet, water quality, and growth rates. The carp remain in the tank until they reach the C3 stage, by which time they have established strong growth, good shape, and the hardy characteristics we look for in future Wingham Fisheries carp.

Then, we move them to our dedicated finishing ponds, where they spend up to a year adapting to more natural conditions and food sources, feeding off the bottom, and developing the
